Semana Santa
Spain/France/Germany/UK/Italy/Denmark 2002.
Director: Pepe Danquart
Cast: Mira Sorvino, Olivier Martinez, Féodor Atkine, Alida Valli
Aka: Angel of Death

Police inspector Mira Sorvino arrives to Sevilla, a little Spanish town, just in time for the Easter celebration (the Semana Santa). Two twin brothers are found dead at a hotel room with their bodies arranged so they mirror a famous painting (but why?). Mira must investigate and suspects the killer to be a member of some weird brotherhood of bullfighters. He isn't. He's just killing a series of people to protect his family name and thinks it's funny if the brotherhood gets the blame.

Just take a look at the list of countries involved in the production and then count to eight (8) different producers and you are forgiven for wondering how someone can avoid going crazy while trying to manage a lowbudget horror film under such circumstances.

Sure enough, Semana Santa is all over the map but doesn't for a minute leave the tired clichés of the slasher genre. The plot is woefully insufficient, implausible and confusing and it takes a good while to straighten out what it's about and even when you have you realise it's too stupid. The police investigators jumps from clue to clue to witness without any clear explanation. And what is Mira Sorvino doing in here exactly? Thought she could walk through a film while on vacation? She walks around with a blank face, hardly moving a muscle unnessessarily, staring at various religious imagery and suddenly some new information pops up from nowhere and off we go again. Only at the very end, when confronted with the killer, do Mira hint at how alive and present she can be on screen, but by then we have already given up on this hopeless bore of a film. No, fans of this actress is ordered to pick up Mimic for a more worthy genre exercise. The only actor here who stand out is the great Alida Valli (Suspiria, Third Man) as an old lady who sits on the key to the mystery. Apart from her presence Semana Santa hasn't got anything to offer except an opportunity to waste 90 minutes of time. Don't accept it.
