The Ring
USA
2002. Director: Gore Verbinski
Cast: Naomi Watts, David Dorfman, Daveigh Chase, Brian Cox

In short (you should be familiar with it by
now), Reporter Naomi Watts gets her hands on a videotape which kills
everyone who watches it within seven days. By accident her kid manage
to watch the tape so she tracks it down to Moesko Island and goes there
to find out who made the tape and why. Soon she unveils the tragic story
of Samara, a girl who disappeared many years ago. As expected this remake
of the Japanese original is slick, well acted and slick. A horror movie
for adults which benefits from its strong images and from director Verbinski's
ability to deliver a constantly chilling atmosphere. But the screenplay
is sometimes sketchy, sometimes overdone and there are confusing and
ridiculous parts in just about every reel with weird characters (and
horses) turning up for little or no reason (Brian Cox). Who exactly
is that on the phone, by the way, informing each victim of their time
left? And if that damn kid knew from the beginning that one shouldn't
help Samara, why didn't he tell earlier? Is he evil? Is he Damien?
