Ghost Ship The luxury liner Antonia Graza unexpectedly turns up abandoned after having been lost for about 40 years. Since it turns up on international water a team of salvage experts lead by Gabriel Byrne gets an opportunity to claim the ship and when they bord it they find a fortune in gold and plenty of ghosts to match. Yea, well, one after another they are killed. I didn't find Ghost Ship to be a wreckage at all, although I didn't like the prologue which I thought was silly and overdone. 80 people cut in half in one go, hurrah. I seem to be the only one who didn't like this part, though, so don't make too much of it. The rest of the film is pretty fair, even if it's not one bit scary. The plot have been done one or two times before but it's still manage to avoid being too predictable towards the end. I don't know why they always have to use techno-metal on the soundtrack during the flashbacks, but I think I like it. The cast keep the comic reliefs to a minimum and Juliana Margulies is a strong actress, just the kind who makes all the difference between cheap tounge-in-cheek and something more substantial. The set pieces are mostly atmospheric and the special effects (by K.N.B EFX) are better than usual, a good mixture of good old-fashioned rubber and digital effects. All this said, Ghost Ship doesn't scare your pants off, but it's still a genre offering which by impressive craft nevertheless puts most of its competition to shame. And for that it deserves an extra star.
