Dagon
Spain/USA 2001. Director: Stuart Gordon
Cast: Ezra Godden, Raquel Merono, Francisco Rabal, Alfredo Villa

More than 15 years ago helmers Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna had this dream about Shadow Over Innsmouth, an epic adaptation of a couple of H.P Lovecraft novels. Of that became nothing except for a handful of staggering Bernie Wrightson drawings. Until this opportunity came around that is.

The folks of the small Spanish fishing town Imboca worships the fish-God Dagon and has therefore mutated into fishmen who walks and crawls around chanting "Eä! Eä! Cthulhu F'tghn!" (or something like that). A guy and his girlfriend on vacation crashes their sailboat just off the coast and must seek help in the town. It turns out that the only one in this town who hasn't gills and tentacles is a wino (Francisco Rabal) who later informs us of the tragic history of how the locals turned their back on God and started worshipping Dagon instead because he gave them more fish. When the girlfriend (Raquel Merono) then disappears, the guy, our hero (Ezra Godden), finds himself chased around town by the mad fishmen. But is it really a coincidence that he ended up in this godforsaken town?

Perhaps director Gordon should have waited a couple more years because this lowbudget production have a feeling of a compromise over it, a now or never thing. Though considering that 8 out of 10 Lovecraft adaptations are crap, Dagon is still very okey I guess, intriguing and original enough to keep your attention despite what could have been. And after all, it has a wide range of freaky creatures on parade and also a gritty rainy atmosphere that's quite pleasing. On the dragging side some of the CG effects feels out of place (and unnecessary), some of the splatter effects feels overdone (like the killing of the wino) and some of the creatures just look plastic (it works better when they have some sort of ripped potato-sack over their heads). Never mind though, it's still a fun old-fashioned freak-treat for Lovecraft and horror fans alike. F'tghn to that.
