Mimic
2
USA
2002. Director: Jean De Segonzac
Cast: Alix Koromzay, Bruno Campos, Will Estes, Jon Polito

The original Mimic
benefited from good production values, a couple of really fine performances
(especially from Giancarlo Giannini) and the obvious skills of director
Guillermo Del Toro (Blade 2). Unfortunately not much of that
is evident in this disappointing sequel. Only Alix Koromzay, who only
played a small part the first time, returns for a second round and even
that doesn't matter since not many will recognize or remember her anyway.
She smells last minute solution when everybody else from the first film
chose to save their asses and say no thanks but sequels suck. Essentially
Koromzay plays the same part Mira Sorvino played the first time, or
actually her assistant, an entomologist ("the bug lady" as
the children calls her) who becomes stalked by the mutated cockroach
she once took part in creating. Together with some kids from the school
where she's teaching and a local police detective (Bruno Campos) she
takes refuge in the school's cellar. The battle for surviving to the
next movie begins.
Mimic
2 has some good atmospheric cinematography (by Nathan Hope, let's
name that guy at least, because he's innocent), but other than that the
film is just a quickly produced cash-in for Miramax. Despite looking good
the film feels cheap and at only 75 minutes approx it is nevertheless
way too crowded and the plot is so strained and all over the place that
it's a tough match to bother. The main cockroach, the "mimic"
as they now call it, is bigger and more clever this time, it can now impersonate
specific humans in detail and learn from its own mistakes. Hell, at one
point, when mimicing a fat guy, it even offers our heroine a slice of
pizza in some kind of weird declaration of love to her. Yea, you read
that right. It turns out Koromzay have been chosen to be the mimic's queen
and the ending is so fucking awful it defies description (but it involves
flowers). The only positive thing to come out of watching a ludicrous
mess such as Mimic 2 is that you'll appreciate the first Mimic
so much more. This sequel is damn near worthless.
