Backflash
USA 2001. Director: Phil Jones
Cast: Robert Patrick, Kenneth Moskow, Jennifer Esposito

They definitely make far too many of these desert crime movies, but this is one which is made watchable thanks to great offbeat casting. The story follows a hitch-hiking girl (Esposito) who tries to seduce the nerdish owner of a video store (Patrick) while she is being chased by the local mafia because she has stolen their money. But look out, all is not what it seem to be. A fantastic Vyto Ruginis almost manage to steal the whole show as an incredibly peculiar and sleazy motel owner, while Melissa Joan Hart, TV's Sabrina the Teenage Witch, is a coroner hooked on drugs in two scenes which doesn't seem like they belong in the film at all. Backflash is a story you've seen a thousand times before, but the fun cast and the many twists and turns makes it worth the effort of seeing it one more time.
